Die 70'er Jahre

1971

  • Das Canada Geographic Information (CGIS) kommt zum operationellen Einsatz.

1972

  • Der erste Landsat-Satellite wird gestartet (ursprünglich ERTS-1 genannt).
  • IBM GTIS (GFIS) (http://giswww.pok.ibm.com/) wird angeboten - ein Vorreiter bei der Nutzung relationaler Datenbanken.
  • Das General Information System for Planning (GISP) wird vom UK Department of the Environment entwickelt.

  • The first AUTOCARTO conference held in September 1974, in Reston, Virginia. (Although the AUTOCARTO series really started the year before as the International Symposium on Computer-Assisted Cartography).
  • Experimental Cartography Unit (ECU) established at the Royal College of Art in London.

  • Marble, Calkins & Peuquet "Basic Readings in Geographic Information Systems" publiziert.
  • Beginn der Entwicklung des ATKIS-Konzepts

  • Der 80386-Prozessor wird verfügbar.
  • Die Entwicklung von GRASS- Geographic Resources Analysis Support System beginnt in den US Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories.

1986

  • Start des ersten SPOT-Satelliten
  • Das Graphische Kernsystem (GKS) wird als DIN und ISO-Norm verabschiedet.
  • SQL wird als ANSI-Standard verabschiedet.
  • SICAD auf dem PC als Erfassungsarbeitsplatz.
  • Peter Burrough veröffentlicht "Principles of Geographic Information Systems for Land Resources Assessment", zu dieser Zeit das Standardwerk im GIS-Bereich.
  • 2. International Spatial Data Handling Symposium, Seattle
  • Der erste SPOT Satellit wird gestartet.

1987

  • "Handling Geographic Information : the report of the Committee of Inquiry", auch Chorley-Report gennant, erscheint. Er trägt wesentlich zur Förderungn der GI-Technologie in Großbrittanien bei.
  • The International Journal of Geographical Information Systems wird publiziert.
  • Idrisi Project von Ron Eastman (Clark University) initiiert.

1988

  • UK's Regional Research Laboratory (RRL) Initiative.
  • T. GIS/LIS Conference in den Vereinigten Staaten.
  • Der GIS-L Internet list-server wird von Ezra Zubrow, State University of New York at Buffalo, installiert.
