OpenStreetMap produces free (CC licensed) street maps for cities all over the world. The basic idea is to use GPS, with assistance of satellite photography from Landsat 7, or capture data. This community driven project enters data in wiki style and develops its own easy to use toolset for entering data or even their output to .SVG. They are the inventors of the so called mapping parties where participants meet for a weekend to get a region or town entirely mapped by GPS data. Interfaces to street navigation systems are in development.
The project is focused for the time beeing on streets, but heavy development in Map Features is under way. The first street was entered in December 2004. Since August 2006 the OpenStreetMap Foundation is registered as an international non-profit organisation in England and Wales See also: WikiPedia
